Tomatoes for a veggie (Although it is sometimes considered a fruit on rare occasion), and strawberries also grow easily given the right start.
They grow OK in non-tropical conditions too. Just trying to help…..

What are some tropical, perennial plants, bushes or trees w/ RED OR YELLOW FLOWERS for Zone 9?

Zone 9 is desert like conditions, we get heat in the 100 degrees and cold in the low 40’s. I want a beautiful tropical garden, please help!

Having grown up and recently transplanted from a tropical Island to Florida, I can understand your need for a tropical garden. Here are some of the flowers I have to remind me of my beautiful island home.
1. Red Hibiscus and Yellow Hibiscus, either single or double bloom.
2. Yellow or red centered plumeria.
3. bottle brush plant (red)
4. geraniums either red or yellow
5. I would suggest planting a bird of paradise also with a combination of beautiful colors.
6. Bouganvilla would also look nice in your tropical garden
and it comes in a variety of pinks, reds, and yellows.

well there are many plants you can use…of course look around at other houses just to get an idea of what type of plants may survive. there are sago palms or king palms, grasses, iris, bird of paradise, banana trees, canna Tropicana and or outdoor decor get fountains that symbolize water falls, use colors for both flowers and decor, such as yellows, reds, oranges, purples, even brownish yellowish colors.

Ideas for a tropical garden with dry, unfertile soil ?

Posted by Tropical Gardener on Oct 26, 2009 under Tropical Gardens

I am from Sri Lanka which is a tropical country. There is a patch in my garden with unfertile & dry soil. It is very shady so I tried growing foliage plants. They have grown but still the soil is not rich enough. Could you give me some ideas as to what to do with it.

You need to improve the soil. You can do this by adding some mulch and turning it into the soil. Try planting bromeliads, crotons or cordylines. They are colorful foliage plants and I am sure they will be available there. Water and fertilise regularly for success. Good luck.
